1. India becomes Vice Chair of the Asia Pacific Region of World Customs Organisation

India has become the Vice-Chair (Regional Head) of the Asia Pacific Region of  World Customs Organisation (WCO) for a period of two years, from July, 2018 to June, 2020.

  1. The WCO has divided its Membership into six Regions. Each of the six Regions is represented by a regionally elected Vice-Chairperson to the WCO Council.
  2. Being the Vice Chair of AP Region of WCO will enable India to take on leadership role.
  3. WCO represents 182 Customs administrations across the globe that collectively process approximately 98% of world trade.

2. Rajnath Singh co-chairs the 6th meeting of India-Bangladesh Home Minister level talks

The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh co-chaired the 6th meeting of the Home Minister level talks with his Bangladesh counterpart, Mr. Asaduzzaman Khan in Dhaka.

  1. During the meeting, all security related matters of interest including counter-terrorism, capacity building and increased cooperation between security agencies, border management, countering illegal activities like fake currency, drug and human trafficking, consular issues etc. were discussed.
  2. The two Ministers also witnessed the signing of the Revised Travel Arrangement 2018 (RTA 2018) amending the earlier RTA 2013 for further liberalizing the visa regime between the two countries, including enhanced duration for employment and student visas.

3. PM in Mirzapur, dedicates Bansagar Canal Project to the Nation

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi,  dedicated the Bansagar Canal Project to the Nation in Mirzapur.

  1. This project will provide a big boost to irrigation in the region, and will be greatly beneficial for the farmers of Mirzapur and Allahabad districts of Uttar Pradesh.
  2. Shri Narendra Modi laid the Foundation Stone of the Mirzapur Medical College.
  3. He inaugurated 100 Jan Aushadhi Kendras in the State. He also dedicated a bridge over the River Ganga at Balughat, Chunar, which will facilitate connectivity between Mirzapur and Varanasi.

4. President of India Addresses the Shiromani Kabir Prakat Diwas Celebrations

 

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, graced and addressed the Shiromani Kabir Prakat Diwas (Kabir Jayanti) in Fatehabad, Haryana on July 15, 2018.

  1. This function was organised by the Dhanak Sabha Fatehabad and the Sant Kabir Dhanak Samaj Karamchari Welfare Association, Haryana.

5. MCA constituted Committee to review the offences under the Companies Act, 2013

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has constituted a 10 Member Committee, headed by the Secretary of Ministry of Corporate Affairs, for review of the penal provisions in the Companies Act, 2013.

  1. The MCA seeks to review offences under the Companies Act, 2013 as some of the offences may be required to be decriminalised and handled in an in-house mechanism, where a penalty could be levied in instances of default.
  2. This would also allow the trial courts to pay more attention on offences of serious nature.

6. Sindhu loses to Okuhara in final of Thailand Open

Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu’s title drought this year continued as she suffered a straight-game defeat against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the summit clash of Thailand Open badminton tournament.

  1. Second seed Sindhu struggled with her consistency throughout the duel as fourth seeded Okuhara dominated the proceedings to beat the Indian 21-15 21-18 in exactly 50 minutes.

7. Novak Djokovic wins fourth Wimbledon by beating Kevin Anderson

Novak Djokovic earned his first Grand Slam title in more than two years by beating Kevin Anderson to win his fourth Wimbledon championship.

  1. Djokovic, seeded 12th, won 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-3) to claim a 13th Slam - his first major since the 2016 French Open.
  2. It is his first title since winning Eastbourne open last year.

8. France Won Its Second World Cup Title

France overwhelmed Croatia 4-2 in the World Cup final at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium to lift the trophy for the second time in 20 years.

  1. The 2018 FIFA World Cup was the 21st FIFA World Cup.
  2. It took place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018.
  3. Golden Boot: Henry Kane
  4. Best player: Luka Modric
  5. Best goalkeeper: Thibaut Courtois
  6. Fairplay Award: Spain
